Driving Instructor Course
Our Driving Instructor Training Course has been designed with trainees and instructors. Edited and approved by experienced and highly qualified ORDIT Driving Instructor Trainer Nigel Dawson, of Excelsior Training, it covers the entire syllabus and beyond, preparing you for your driver training career. The training follows the Driving Standards Agency examination process from start to finish and beyond.
Part 1: Driving and Driver Training Theory
The part 1 examination is made up of 2 sections - a theory test, with multiple choice questions and the hazard perception test. They demand a thorough knowledge of the Highway Code, driving law and training principles.
Many companies offering instructor training will expect you to pay high prices for classroom tuition for part 1 which is often unnecessary, however, other companies suggest that you should study for this alone. At Beyond Driving we feel that the Part 1 is an essential part of your training and should be taken in the context of the whole course. To do this we will provide you with a list of essential reading which you are welcome to purchase where you like, or from ourselves, often at a discount to the reccomended retail prices.
You will receive free training for this part of the course on-line, and will be able to contact your trainer directly at any time during your training. Theory is an essential part of the training course, and you will be encouraged to see all of your studies in the context of driving in the modern environment and driver training.
Part 2: The Test of Driving Ability
The Driving Ability test is a driving test, designed to ensure that as a driving instructor you are capable of driving to the highest standards. Our trainers are trained to deal with experienced drivers - and you won't need L-plates for this! The amount of training necessary for this depends on your current driving standard, for example an experienced professional driver may only need a few sessions to bring them up to date with current practises and DSA recommended driving styles, but a less experienced driver may need up to 30 hours of training.
Part 3: The Test of Teaching Ability
The Part 3 test is an exacting assessment of your ability to find driving faults, analyse them and put in place remedial action to solve the problem. In order to do this we have a probably the most comprehensive course in the UK, from preparation, through instructional techniques to preparation for the part 3 examination and beyond. We aim to prepare professionals ready to start their own driver training businesses, and our course is geared towards this.
Many national companies offer complete packages ranging from £2500 to £4500 which seem to include all of this training, but from our experience, they often give little time to their trainees. You may be promised 40 hours of training to find that you share these 40 hours with another trainee - effectively giving you only 20 hours of direct training for your part 3 exam. With our training course, you pay as you go - meaning you do not have to pay a large lump sum in advance, and for a similar (or lower) price you will take around 50 hours of direct training with ourselves - on a 1 to 1 basis. On top of this you will be provided the chance to take external assessments and training with some of the finest trainers in the UK. This freedom and extent of training is provided by no other company.
So how much does it cost to become a driving instructor?
Training with us should cost between £2500 and £3500, and will include at the very minimum 70 hours of direct 1 to 1 training - personally tailored to your needs. Remember that you will bring different skills to your training, and as such each individual will need different amounts of training at each stage, the breakdown below is based on our experience of how much training usually needs to be taken.
Typical Driving Instructor Training Cost Breakdown:
Books and Materials: £150
Part 2 Training - 20 hours: £600
Part 3 Training from Beyond Driving - 56 hours: £1680
Part 3 External Training 2 full days: £400
DSA Examination Fees: £245
Total Cost of Instructor Training: £3075
This breakdown of costs involves ALL of your training materials and books, examination fees for ALL 3 EXAMS and 92 HOURS OF 1 TO 1 TRAINING. How many other courses offer this amount of training - let alone at this quality.
No company can guarantee that you will pass in a certain time. Those who do offer "guarantees" often hide their get out clauses in the small print. Training to be a driving instructor is not a "package" you can buy off the shelf.
